3-Delhi police arrest main $235m WazirX hack suspect
India Today reported that a suspect in the $235 million WazirX breach was apprehended, citing a police file. West Bengal native SK Masud Alam was arrested for creating a false WazirX account and hacking.
According to Delhi police, Alam offered a bogus account under the name “Souvik Mondal” on Telegram to “M Hasan,” who used it to access WazirX’s multi-signature wallet and steal cash. The police report also states that its Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations branch requested Liminal Custody’s help in seizing WazirX’s wallets.
Liminal Custody did not react to several information demands, causing security concerns. Another report will explore Liminal’s participation as the inquiry proceeds, police added.
Police confiscated three computers used by authorized signatories to approve transactions from WazirX to investigate multi-signature wallet usage. WazirX sent authorities transaction data, ID information, and transaction logs, according to the report. According to India Today, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre detected no illegal access to WazirX’s internal systems locally or remotely.
The July 18 cyber-attack cost WazirX $235 million, forcing it to pursue a Scheme of Arrangement in Singapore under local bankruptcy procedures. Grant Thornton’s independent audit found no evidence linking Liminal Custody’s infrastructure to the multi-million dollar breach.
